Best Registered Agent in Massachusetts: Nine Services, Reviewed and Priced

Honest resident agent representation in Massachusetts for $99/year. Includes the address used on filings, same-day scanning of legal mail, and reminders for state deadlines.

A disclosure belongs at the top rather than in a footnote. Massachusetts Registered Agent.co assembled this comparison, placed itself in the first row, and earns money when a reader agrees with that placement. Weigh the self-assessment as an interested party's argument. The prices are a separate matter, because every number below was transcribed from what the vendor itself was advertising when we reviewed the market in July 2026, the one figure undercutting ours included.

Why the First Row Is Ours

Ranking yourself first is a claim that has to be paid for in specifics, so here are ours. Anything served on us in Massachusetts is scanned and filed into your portal before the close of that same business day, and an email goes out alongside it, since a response deadline starts running at service rather than at the moment you find out. The price reads $99 for the first year and $99 for each one following it, since no renewal step was ever built into the plan. Checkout holds one product and no ladder of upgrades to decline. Our street address occupies the resident agent line on your public record so that yours does not. The only additional charge in the arrangement, $15 per item to scan ordinary business mail, is disclosed on this page rather than on a later statement.

One claim we will not make is the lowest number. On sticker price alone we lose: the cheapest registered agent service in Massachusetts, going purely by what is published, is BetterLegal's $90, which sits nine dollars below us. Our argument is narrower and sturdier. Ours is among the lowest flat annual prices listed, it bundles same-day scanning rather than metering it, and the figure holds in year two, year five, and year twelve.

2. Northwest Registered Agent

Northwest holds second place here, and we intend that as praise rather than consolation. The company prints its numbers, staffs its phone lines with employees who answer, and built a business on address privacy before the rest of the industry noticed the demand existed. Two conditions narrow the offer. The complimentary first year appears only alongside a Northwest formation; standing alone, the agent product is $125 a year. Dropping to $100 requires filings in at least five states, a bar a Massachusetts-only company never comes near. So the figure that governs for most readers here is $125, which means paying $26 more each year for a seat that performs the same duties.

3. BetterLegal

At $90 a year, BetterLegal prints the lowest renewal in the table, and our July 2026 check verified it against their own page. What the check could not settle was the first-year arrangement, which appears nowhere in plain text on their site. On a page built entirely around published pricing, a fully documented $99 outranks a partially documented $90. Anyone who reaches their order form, reads how the first year bills, and is satisfied with it has found a genuinely cheap agent, and we would rather concede that than pretend nine dollars is nothing.

4. Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer charges $125 a year and holds that rate steady across every membership tier, with no introductory discount tucked into any level. Pricing discipline of that kind deserves credit in a category that rarely shows it. The open question is whether you need what surrounds the service. Agent coverage at Rocket Lawyer is one component of a legal subscription that also sells document templates and attorney consultations. A business drawing on those tools routinely is getting fair value for the money. A Massachusetts owner who wants an in-state address and fast scanning is paying platform prices to use a single feature of the platform.

5. ZenBusiness

ZenBusiness runs the most polished setup experience among these nine, which we have no interest in disputing. Its pricing repays a careful read. Bought on its own, agent service is $99 plus state fees to begin with, and then $199 every year once renewals start. Since a Massachusetts entity keeps an agent for as long as it stays registered, the $199 is the figure that actually governs your budget. That works out to $100 a year above our rate, spent on an interface you will open a handful of times.

6. Bizee (formerly Incfile)

Bizee, formerly trading as Incfile, throws agent coverage in free with its formation packages, for a period that stretches between three months and twelve according to the tier you bought. A founder already committed to forming through Bizee keeps that money. What it costs instead is calendar discipline. Standalone service resumes at $149 a year once the included window expires, and because the coverage began free, its expiration tends to pass unnoticed.

7. LegalZoom

At $249 a year, LegalZoom carries the highest flat rate on this page, renews automatically, and our July 2026 review located no first-year discount softening the entry. The extra money buys the best-known name in consumer legal services. It does not buy different standing at the Corporations Division, which draws no distinction between an agent charging $249 and one charging $90: both owe a Massachusetts street address, availability through business hours, and prompt handoff of anything served. Whether that recognition justifies a bill $150 above ours every single year is a call the buyer has to make alone.

8. Swyft Filings

Swyft Filings quotes $149, but that covers three months rather than twelve. Annualize it and the figure climbs to about $596, easily the costliest outcome in the table, with no introductory discount surfacing in our review. Quarterly billing also flatters itself, since four charges of $149 feel smaller than the $596 they sum to. Set against our rate, one Swyft year buys approximately six of ours.

9. Inc Authority

The first year at Inc Authority costs nothing, and the company says nothing about the second. Searching their site in July 2026, we came up empty on renewal pricing across the package pages, the FAQ, and the homepage, which normally signals a number held back until an order form or a sales conversation. A table sorted by published rates can only rank an unpublished one last. The free year is genuine enough. What sits behind it is a figure the company chose to keep off the page, and a price nobody lets you read in advance is rarely a price built to impress.

What Massachusetts Asks of Whoever Holds the Seat

Every service above can lawfully occupy the role, because the Commonwealth sets its bar by category rather than by brand. The governing statute is M.G.L. c. 156C § 5, implemented by the Corporations Division regulation at 950 CMR 112.13, and it uses Massachusetts vocabulary. The office is called the resident agent here. Every vendor in the table sells the service under the national label, registered agent, and both names describe one position, but the word appearing on your filings will be the local one.

Eligibility covers four categories: an individual who resides in Massachusetts; a domestic corporation; a foreign corporation holding authority to transact business here; and, by way of the regulation, additional business entities that are authorized by law and qualified in the Commonwealth. The address standard is where the rule bites. The agent's office must be a street address, and the regulation states outright that a post office address will not satisfy the requirement. Separately, and this trips people up, the LLC carries its own duty to keep an in-state office housing the records the statute demands. Those are two distinct obligations, and a professional agent answers only the first of them.

The $500 Report, and Why Filing It Online Costs $520

Your recurring filing lands at the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Corporations Division, and this state prices it unlike almost anywhere else. The annual report is $500 on paper and $520 filed electronically or by fax, the difference being a $20 expedite surcharge that is mandatory on those channels rather than an upgrade you elect. Formation follows the same pattern, since the Certificate of Organization under M.G.L. c. 156C § 12 runs $500 by mail or walk-in and $520 electronically or by fax. Measured against the other forty-nine states, an annual report at this level sits near the ceiling.

The deadline belongs to you alone. Reports come due each year by the certificate's own filing anniversary, so no statewide season exists and no shared cutoff circulates to remind you. Missing it produces something worse than a penalty charge, because 950 CMR 112.22 lets the Corporations Division dissolve a non-filing LLC administratively. That is the practical case for caring who opens your mail. When a $500 obligation runs on a private calendar, an agent tracking the date and forwarding state notices the day they land is delivering something worth more than the $26 or $150 a year separating the options in the table.

Hold the annual report next to the agent change and the incentive inverts. Changing your resident agent or resident office falls under c. 156C § 5A, and the Corporations Division charges nothing at all when the Statement of Change goes in electronically. The identical document costs $25 on paper, with a further $6 added if it travels by fax. So the Commonwealth adds $20 to file your report online and subtracts $25 to change your agent online, which is a fee schedule carrying more than one philosophy inside it.

The practical reading is straightforward. Nothing in Massachusetts law or pricing binds you to an agent you have stopped trusting, and no departing service can bill you for the exit. If a renewal notice arrives at $199 or $249 and the value is not there, walking away is a free electronic filing. Clients who transfer the appointment to us get that filing handled as part of setup, with the steps laid out on our change of agent page.

Reading the Table as a Massachusetts Owner

Nine services, every one of them eligible under c. 156C § 5, and what survives the comparison is price, speed, and candor about the second year. One bills quarterly and annualizes near $596. One declines to print a renewal at all. The best-known name asks $249. Ours asks $99 now and $99 in every year you keep it, documents scanned the day they arrive, with a Massachusetts street address standing on the public record in place of yours. In a state that already collects $500 a year for the privilege of existing, the agent line is one of the few places the number can stay small.
